The world’s largest video game collection can be yours now!
Michael Thomasson, who has bought more than 11,000 video games and over 100 game consoles over the last 20 years needs the money to better support his family.
Thomasson has been collecting games and consoles since the 80s, with his yearly budget for purchasing games and gaming systems being somewhere around $3,000. The gamer’s collection was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the largest such collection in the world in July 2013, two years after he submitted his claim.
His full collection, as documented by the Guinness World Records, is available for sale, and he won’t be holding any title or platform back.
“I have over 11,000 individual and unique games, and growing. I purchase on average about two games a day. I keep to a regimented budget and have limited myself to approximately $3,000 a year for the past 20 years,” Thomasson told Retro. “Most of the games released before the ’90s are loose, while most since are complete. About a third of the collection is still factory sealed and shrink-wrapped.”
Though he's selling his collection, Thomasson says he isn't leaving the gaming hobby or collecting behind. This isn't even the first time he's had to start his collection over from scratch: Thomasson says he paid for his wedding by selling off complete sets of TurboGrafx-16 and Sega Master System games in 1998.
"I've sold my collection many times in the past and still managed to capture Guinness' attention, and it is entirely possible that I may again," he said.
Bidding started at $1 on Wednesday at GameGavel, and with around 5 days left to go, the price has reached $101,001 – though the reserve price has not been met yet.
